We know you all love Snowboarding and Skiing (You must do if your part of our commuinty) and we all have experienced the joy it can bring. If your a soldier fighting in the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan however, snowboarding maybe at the back of your mind. But not for many soldiers, especially those based in Colorado that are snowboarders.
The G, 2nd Battalion, 135th General Support Aviation, which is a helicopter medical evacuation unit based out of Colorado, just returned home this May after a year in Iraq. The primary mission for the Company was to provide life-saving support to U.S. and Coalition soldiers there. It's standard for soldiers in the unit to be issued a pistol to commemorate their deployment and service, but Staff Sergeant Edwin Wiley already has three commemorative pistols. This time around he wanted to do something different, so he contacted Never Summer last May to inquire about getting a custom run of commemorative snowboards made.
Wiley and the unit collaborated with Never Summer's Jeremy Salyer on the graphic design, a silhouette of a Black Hawk Helicopter like the ones the Battalion flew in Iraq. The board base is custom die-cut that reads "DUSTOFF" -- short for: "Dedicated, Unhesitating Service to Our Fighting Forces."
"I guess they had a pretty active debate on the final choices, and we came up with the final graphic after the unit took a vote," says Never Summer's Mike "Gags" Gagliardi.
Gagliardi and fellow Never Summer collaborator Chris Harris attended the unit's welcome home ceremony, where 66 boards were distributed to a group of stoked soldiers. The unit then returned the favor by presenting Never Summer with a Certificate of Thanks and a special U.S. flag.
"I was shocked ... my jaw literally dropped," Gagliardi admits. "We never expected to receive anything like this back from these guys. [The flag] flew in five different unit missions in Iraq. ... These guys are the ones putting their lives on the line. It is proudly displayed at the Never Summer offices."
The Denver, Colo.-based snowboard manufacturer is already planning other projects with the armed forces.
It may sound like the start to a joke; but this is a true story of a little Mini that could! A daredevil duo have created the ultimate set of wheels for thrillseekers - a car designed to drive on ski slopes. The incredible motor can jump a 30 metre road gap, plough down a snow-covered flight of stairs and even negotiate a rail slide. Driver and inventor Guerlain Chicherit, 32, decided to create the car after being torn between his two passions - rally driving and skiing. He persuaded his rally-driving sponsors, Mini and energy drink Monster to let him create the ultimate rally-driving car - that can do everything he could do on skis. The Mini ALL4 wheel drive is tough enough to plummet down a huge flight of stairs - but incredibly, can also perform a jump to land on an avalanche barrier six metres above the ground. It can soar across snowy canyons as wide as 30 metres - but is still light enough to perform complicated spins on a frozen lake.
Guerlain, from Tignes, France, said: 'I am a professional skier, but I love to do rally driving in my spare time. I love the rush of adrenalin that both sports can bring, and one day, I came up with this crazy idea of doing them both together. I wanted to do exactly what I do with my skis, in my car. I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it before. I spent a long time designing the course, and talking to my sponsors about the car specifications - but it was such a thrill when I finally got to try out my new sport. I wasn't allowed to destroy the racecar, so I haven't made that many changes to what was already a very expensive car - I've just applied different driving techniques, which are more similar to skiing. I'm already working on designing a much bigger and better car that is lighter, more powerful - and less expensive. Lots of people have told me they are keen to try it themselves - so maybe a new sport is born!'
Guerlain was filmed negotiating the car around a custom-built giant course in Dakar, Senegal, by photographer and fellow rally driver Tristan Shu who filmed the whole ride from a helicopter. Tristan said: 'A lot of people said it couldn't be done, but Guerlain and I were determined to make it work. He wanted to have an incredible drive around the course, and I wanted to take amazing pictures and videos. It was a great thrill watching him drive around - and we're hoping we can make an even bigger and better model for next year!'
We're asked a lot on our Facebook Page what kind of ski experience is needed before coming out to our ski instructor course in Canada - or how good do I need to be to come on your snowboard instructor training course. And the truth is that our ski and snowboard instructors are so awesome that they'll get you to where you want to be in no time, regardless of your level. Sure it helps to know what you're doing but it's not essential - we can make ski and snowboard instructors from anyone!
That said, we couldn't let this site pass us by without a mention. iskischool.com is the world's first ski instruction and mobile apps store purely for skiing. Basically it means that you can start your lessons from anywhere, and at any time - which means that you can grasp the fundamentals without setting foot on a ski or board - or a plane or inside a dry slope centre.
We'd love to see you our in Jasper in January, and we don't care how good, bad or otherwise you are at skiing, but if you have any doubts (and an iPhone or Android phone), then why not head over to iskischool.com and download a few of their tutes to get you started.
Earlier this week we posted one of the more calming ski videos we've found around the net, well today it's one of the more insane - a guy called Troy Hartman (some of you may know him) testing out his own personal jet pack. Whilst skiing. Just 50% throttle yielded a speed of 47 mph, and apparently ascend set of test runs demonstrated ascents of black diamond rated slopes. We'll post when footage is available! In the meantime, take a look at some of his other bonkers stunts here... http://www.troyhartman.com.
So much of skiing and snowboarding is marketed nowadays using heavy rock or dance music, showing extreme jumping, riding and stunts. And while that's all very entertaining - and without doubt impressive, we thought we'd take a minute to look at one of the more serene (and yet technically excellent) skiing videos we've seen for a long time. So sit back, chillax and have a look at this pair not so much tearing in up as gently caressing the snow beneath their skis!
Whether you want to ballet ski or race, we've got the course that will get you where you need to be, so learn to become a great ski instructor with Canadian Rockies Academy...
Equipment expense is one of the most common reasons for people not to take up a winter sport. We think that's a real shame and so we scoured the net for ways to solve this problem. Imagine our delight when we came across an article by Michael Millban over at snowboardcipher.comtelling you how to MAKE a snowboard!! We were very quickly brought down to earth though when we realised it's not as easy - or as cheap - as you might think! I guess though, once you've made one, you can make lots and make some money!!
A snowboard is basically built like a sandwich. It has several different layers. At the bottom you have the base. Then next comes the lower reinforcement material. Then you will have the center or the core of the board. Then you will have the upper reinforcement material. And finally, it will all be topped off with what is called the top sheet.
The core of the snowboard will need to be protected from weather and elements so that it doesn’t get ruined. It has to be completely enclosed. There are two different types of side wall systems that are used that will allow you to achieve this important step. First, we have what is called side wall construction. You actually will glue a small strip of plastic on the sides and let it bond to sides of the core. Or you can use what is called cap construction. This is basically where the top sheet and other materials are tapered to where they enclose the core material.
All of the materials must be pressed so that the resin is allowed to set and excess air is pushed out. This will result in a stronger built snowboard. Building a snowboard does require tools and some that are very expensive. Booo. The choice of materials that are used for the construction also vary and you will be able to find what is recommended and what is not.
Firefighter's are best known for stopping out of control blazes and saving cats from trees. However one firefighter can handle ice and snow just as well as he handles a burning building. The San Bernardino firefighter has set the Guiness world record for the fastest snowboarder being towed by a snowbaord. Now his intentions were to promote the charity by trying the record and that he did.
Jason Buchanan, 38, of Banning stood on a snowboard towed by a snowmobile for 100 meters last weekend at Mammoth Lakes. He originally planned on pulling off the record at 100 mph, but due to rough terrain, the snowmobile was only able to reach 61 mph.
The world record was based on the distance, so he still qualifies for the world record book. Buchanan set the record to encourage people to donate equipment for winter sports, a charity that will benefit disabled and needy children.
